The Drowsy Chaperone

At the root of our theatremaking is imitation. We recreate and replicate to innumerable ends, not the least of which is to understand our world, ourselves, and our collective fate as we make our march through life’s myriad experiences. The combination of cynical detachment and hilarious familiarity we find in exploring the same stories over and over again can give us delights like this show, and afford us an opportunity both to revel in entertainment escapes and marvel in our own intelligent retelling of old narrative. As we tell ourselves these stories, find old friends inside the words, we each find our own songs, our own themes, our own niche in which to feel our sense of purpose. A modern day Everyman, Neo, or Joseph K, Man in Chair is our vessel through which we relate to his own story, and he carves out a particular niche of theatre in which to find his solace. Like him, I too find solace, passion, inspiration, and community in the theatre.
